JOSF Call for Editors & Peer Reviewers
The MOSF Journal of Science Fiction is seeking applications for new editors to start in the spring of 2023. We seek editors with an established record of expertise in science fiction studies and related fields. New editors are expected to join an editorial team committed to promoting rigorous standards in publishing and attracting top-quality research to all subfields of science fiction. As a scholar-run journal, please note that we currently rely on volunteer-based labor.
The Journal of Science Fiction seeks to uphold the spirit of educated inquiry and speculation through the publication of peer-reviewed, academic articles, essays, and book reviews exploring the interdisciplinary nature of science fiction. We welcome unsolicited, original submissions from academics around the world about science fiction across all forms of media (literature, film, television, video games, art, oral history, etc.). On average, the Journal produces two open-themed peer-reviewed issues a year consisting of perspectives, articles, and book reviews, and at least one special issue on a topic of interest.
Editor Responsibilities:
- Evaluate manuscripts submitted to the journal and make a first determination as to whether they should be sent to peer review, in collaboration with other editors.
- Identify knowledgeable peer reviewers and evaluate reviewer comments.
- Work with authors of selected pieces to improve manuscripts by offering suggestions for revision and preparing articles for publication
- Promote the Journal on social media and in your professional network.
Required/Preferred Qualities for Editors:
M.A. or Ph.D. in Humanities, Sciences, or Social Sciences, or equivalent editorial experience required. Knowledge of English and excellent written communication skills, the ability to gather information and make judgements in a broad set of fields (related to but not solely science and speculative fiction studies), a commitment to anti-racism and inclusion, and the ability to work as part of a diverse team are also essential. Knowledge of Adobe and/or InDesign would be highly desirable.
To apply, applicants should submit a CV and a 1-page letter addressing their research expertise, experience with academic journals, institutional resources that may benefit the Journal, and how the Journal fits within their professional trajectory. The deadline for applications is December 16th, 2022. Please email to aisha.matthews@museumofsciencefiction.org, anthony.boynton@museumofsciencefiction.org, and barbara.jasny@museumofsciencefiction.org with “JOSF Editor Application” in the subject line.
The Journal is also seeking peer reviewers on a rolling basis. We are looking for reviewers interested in academic writing on science fiction (broadly defined) to assist the editorial team’s mission to promote top-quality scholarship. An ideal peer reviewer has experience in academic fields related to, but not solely based in, science and speculative fiction study, and a willingness to provide cogent written reviews.
If you have questions or would like more information please contact us aisha.matthews@museumofsciencefiction.org, anthony.boynton@museumofsciencefiction.org, or barbara.jasny@museumofsciencefiction.org with “JOSF Peer Review” in the subject line.
